Mitutoyo (UK) Ltd launches City & Guilds Level 2 Award in Dimensional Metrology
Mitutoyo (UK) Ltd., in collaboration with City & Guilds, is proud to announce the exclusive launch of a National Qualification in Dimensional Metrology.
Intent to ensure that metrology, the science of measurement, is truly understood and practised as the foremost component of manufacturing excellence, Mitutoyo aims to equip those keen to pursue a career in the quality improvement field, or with the need to upskill, with the very best learning experience and, upon reaching the required standard, for this to be recognised with a highly valued qualification from City & Guilds, a global leader in skill development.
From January 2015, a City & Guilds Level 2 Award in dimensional metrology will be available from Mitutoyo’s four City & Guilds-approved regional training centres. Commencing with the satisfactory completion of a mandatory core unit covering the Fundamentals of Dimensional Metrology, candidates will then be free to select from a choice of seven units which, after successful completion of any one, results in an award.
There are two general units covering Use of Small Dimensional Metrology Instruments and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing, plus five specialist units on Vision Measurement, Surface Measurement, Roundness Measurement, Contour Measurement and Contact Coordinate Measurement. Each unit is a qualification in its own right, thus permitting the candidate to build a portfolio of skills giving immense value to their work performance and a proud recognition of personal abilities and achievement. Mitutoyo are also working to progress the development of higher level awards to suit the subject and skill levels demanded by industry.
The units are designed to develop the understanding of precision dimensional metrology and improve the participants’ overall appreciation of the subject matter in terms of how, when, and where it can be applied and the positive effect on quality assurance. Units normally last between one and five days, are delivered by qualified training engineers using the very latest teaching aids and emphasise hands-on use of measuring instruments and machines.
An assessment follows teaching to determine if a candidate has satisfied the requirements to gain a Level 2 Award. Those wishing to gain the award will firstly be assessed through a simple prior knowledge process, which is explained at time of application.
Candidates for this award are likely to be already employed in, interested in, or about to enter a role where, no matter what is being developed or produced, the appliance of precision measurement is an essential element. Anyone over the age of 16 is able to apply, either independently or nominated by an employer. Mitutoyo also welcomes partnership both with Education and Industry where the qualification may be offered in addition to, or in conjunction with, an existing programme.
